My planner has become my life line so making it pretty makes me want to use it more. I have a few tips and tricks to make your planner pretty and reflect your individual style. Be prepare, it is a fun but (can get) expensive hobby – prepare your bank account because I see some Etsy and Michael’s shopping in your future!
Colored Pens – One of the easiest ways to make your planner colorful and organized is by using colored pens. For some people, the different color pens mean different categories (green- finance, blue- hubby, pink- daughter) etc. This is a great way to organize your planner and have certain things stand out. I personally do not color code categories in my planner. Instead I match my pen color to my spread to create a cohesive look.
Post It Notes – These are great because they are inexpensive and serve different purposes. I use post-its a lot in my pre-planning. I will place information about a date, event or birthday on the post-it in both my weekly and monthly spreads and will peel it off when it is time to decorate those spots. It is a great tool to help remind me when I have certain events without having to constantly check my phone calendar or my daughter’s school calendar. You can also find some really cute post-its at the Dollar Tree and Target Dollar Spot which can be used or decoration in your spread as well.
Highlights – Another relatively inexpensive way to add color to your planner and keep it organized is through the use of highlighters. Highlighters have branched out into awesome colors (not just the neon) and can be used to accent particular events or activities in your planner that you want to catch your eye.
Personalization – I love having a personalized planner. I had my name on my Plum Paper Planner from 2 years ago and this year I have my initials on my Erin Condren Life Planner. This is a great way to make your planner uniquely yours. You can add pictures, change your covers to match the season – whatever you choose. It’s a fun way to draw attention to your planner and make you want to open it.
Washi Tape – I had no idea what washi tape was until about a year and a half ago – and my life has been forever changed! Washi is such a cool way to add color and personality to your planner. You can use it to highlight an activity, mark off sections in your planner (for vacations, weekends etc.) or just to decorate the space. It’s a really easy and relatively inexpensive way to add extra prettiness to your productive day.
Planner Stickers – When I first started planning and wanted to decorate my planner, I bought the MAMBI sticker books to decorate my planner (which if you catch on sale, you can get a good deal). Several sticker books later, I still use these books in most of my planner spreads. Recently I have started ordering stickers and kits from Etsy shops (my favs so far are Brandys Shop, Lexington Flair, Marshmallow Studio, Sticker Guru, Planner Nation, and Sweet Cheeky Designs). This is definitely addicting and can get very expensive. I try and wait until I have a coupon code or there is a good sale going and then I stock up. I also like a little white space in my planning so when I purchase a kit, I usually use it in 2-3 spreads which helps justify the cost of buying them.
Of course, there are a million different ways to decorate your planner, but these are some of my favorites! I would love to see how you decorate your planners!
