Authentic Carne Guisada (Puerto Rican Beef Stew) Recipe
Abuelita (my mother-in-law) was in town again recently and while she was here she made Carne Guisada for my girls because it is a family favorite. Tonight my girls asked for “Abuelita’s Carne” (which in Spanish is Grandma’s beef) and I was happy to oblige because when we have Carne Guisada – we have clean plates because my girls eat. it. all. I figured while I’m making it I will take pictures and share her recipe on here because it is delicious and easy to make. If you are unfamiliar with what Carne Guisada is, it is a type of Spanish Beef Stew that is super flavorful and served over white rice. It is
Ingredients:
1/2 can Goya Tomato Sauce
1 ladle of Sofrito
1.5 lbs beef stew meat, cut into small cubes
1 Idaho Potato, chopped into tiny pieces
1 Packet Sazon Sin Achiote Seasoning
1 Packet Sazon Con Culantro y Achiote Seasoning
1 Packet Goya Chicken Bouillon Seasoning
1 TBSP Adobo Seasoning
Green olives to taste if desired
Step 1: Wash meat thoroughly in water.
Step 2: In a medium sized pot, bring beef stew meat to a boil in about 2 cups of water.
Step 3: As the meat is boiling (uncovered), skim off the brown fat that boils to the top with a spoon and discard – continue skimming until beef no longer has fat coming to the top (approximately 30min).
Step 4: Continue to boil the meat covered for additional 30 minutes until meat is tender.
Step 5: Drain the water from the pot until meat is only slightly covered.
Step 6: Add tomato sauce, sofrito, seasonings, potato, and olives into pot with the stew meat.
Step 7: Mix together meat and all ingredients and continue boiling until potatoes are softened. Serve immediately over white rice.
Enjoy! Buen Provecho!! Let me know if you try Abuelita’s Carne Guisada – what you think of it in the comments!

Thank you! It’s one of my kids favorite recipes! Thanks for stopping by!
What size can of tomato sauce do you use?
the small ones…I want to say it’s 4oz
I just made this for my family and they loved it! Have you made it with chicken instead of beef? Would it be the same recipe?
Hi Diana! So glad they loved it! Yes, you can make it the same way with chicken instead of beef – it takes less time to cook, but it’s equally delicious.
Enjoy! Happy Easter! Thanks for stopping by!
Thank you so much for this recipe!! I made it and it reminded me of my mom’s. I loved it!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for stopping by!
Do you use Sofrito or Racaito? I know the recipe calls for Sofrito but depending on where you are sometimes Racaito is considered Sofrito. So I just want to be sure I’m making the right base, green or red 🙂 thanks!
I use Sofrito – the green. A lot of people use recaito too, but to me it doesn’t taste as good. =) Hope this helps!
I’m not familiar with the spices you use, can you translate for me?
California, white male
Enjoy cooking and would like to try this

Sure! There is a sofrito recipe on my blog – you can find it here – http://www.mommyaboveall.com/puerto-rican-sofrito-recipe
The other seasonings are Goya products and can be found in the “Spanish” aisle of any grocery store – they are pretty common to find.
Hope you enjoy! Thanks for stopping by!
How many servings does this make?
