Hey guys! For 12 years I worked in community mental health – the last 4 years I was a Clinical Supervisor for and Outpatient Community Mental Health Clinic. I was a salaried employee that was paid biweekly and finally made the jump to private practice in March. At the beginning of the year, changes began to happen at my old job that I was not comfortable with. I could not continue working for a place that was unable to see the value or worth of a therapist. So I made the jump to private practice and I am so happy I did. I’m better for it, my family is happier, and I have way more time to do the things I love.
Private practice is definitely a different beast than community mental health. I only get paid for the clients I see, and when the insurance pays me. It took about 2-3 weeks to start to see some decent paychecks. After the third week, insurances began to pay, and I am seeing a much more steady income. I now have Fridays off and only work 20-25 hours a week. In community mental health, I was working anywhere from 43-47 hours a week and burning the candle at both ends. If you are curious to see how I plan my day for work, you can check that out here.
I have included a video of how I am budgeting now that I am receiving weekly paychecks. It will show my income and how I break it down to pay my bills as well as put money into savings.
